Each of the seals is getting about three kilogram’s of fish to eat every day to combat plummeting sea water temperatures.

New Display’s Manger Zoe Kelly says “usually January and February is the time to start dieting after the excesses of the Christmas holidays.

Rhyl’s Baby Bam Boom!
- (Added 18. Jul. 2011)

SeaQuarium Rhyl are so excited about their new arrivals, staff are now feeding baby sharks by hand after the choosy fish refused to dine any other way. The three bamboo sharks will only consume their full daily ration of tiny shrimps if they can eat by hand.

Fortunately for their handlers, the baby sharks - which measure between 4 inches to 6 inches - do not pose any threat, but the males could reach up to 1.2 metres when fully grown!

Aquarist Christy Williams said: 'We started hand-feeding our new arrivals when we noticed them showing no interest in the food,  until I daggled the food into the water I tried it only once to make sure they got enough by hand, and now all of the baby sharks want their meals hand-delivered.

Seal of approval!
- (Added 25. May. 2011)
A frozen Mackerel cake would seem a strange birthday treat for most, but for an African Fur Seal like Solo, it has her seal of approval, and it was the perfect present to mark her first birthday at her new home within the Sealion Cove at Rhyl SeaQuarium.

The team at Rhyl SeaQuarium are celebrating her special day throughout the holiday period alongside her new Seal friend’s, Tondy, Sefur and Bronze who are all looking forward to enjoying their favourite food and hope Solo leaves some cake for them to eat!

Zoe Kelly, Seal Keeper, said Solo was “one of the more special animals” at the aquarium, as she is the youngest African Fur Seal and we all feel like she’s the baby of the pod.
Zoe Kelly said, new enrichment toys and the mackerel treat were on Solo’s present list this year to help celebrate her birthday, and turning 14!

“She’s not really supposed to be eating that much Mackerel, it’s a bit of a treat, but we’ll have to watch her weight.”

Solo makes a big splash in new starring role
- (Added 14. Apr. 2011)

Newly arrived in town and already she is making a dramatic splash.

Fourteen-year-old Solo has just taken up residence at Rhyl’s SeaQuarium and has landed a starring role in their new Peter Pan production for the Easter holidays.

Solo, a South African or Cape fur seal, will be the not-so-villainous Mr Smee, right-hand ‘man’ to the dastardly Captain Hook - but unlike the real pirates she’s far more interested in fishy treats than pieces of eight.

One of her co-stars is also a newcomer to SeaQuarium, 23-year-old Stacy Adams, and a Bangor University graduate who finds she has become not only SeaQuarium’s new sea lion keeper but also that ageless resident of Neverland, Peter Pan.

The Peter Pan themed sea lion show starts for Easter Holidays from Saturday (April 16) and runs for three weeks with two shows a day at 1pm and 3pm, each lasting for around 15-20 minutes.
