The Weston-Super-Mare SeaQuarium was opened in 1995, and was placed upon the first seaside pier to be built in Great Britain for over 85 years. Situated on the beach, the aquarium is surrounded by 3 miles of sand along the coast of Somerset, with panoramic views across the estuary of Wales.
The centre contains an amazing underwater tunnel, providing visitors with a closer look into the depths of our oceans. With sharks, rays and other creatures swimming gracefully past, just inches away. It doesn’t stop there, with over 25 displays throughout the aquarium, visitors can see the beauty and terror of the oceans creatures, from the severn estuary to the wonders of the rainforest rivers.
Our ray zone features an open top display that allows visitors to take a closer look at these graceful creatures as they swim to the surface. You will also have the opportunity to gaze underwater, as the sides of the display are made of a see-through moulded material called acrylic.
Live presentations occur at intervals throughout the day, as do our feeding demonstrations. Please listen for the show announcements.
After your marine journey, why not relax in our seaview tea room with spectacular views of the severn estuary. Please remember, our gift shop is your last stop for a momento of your visit. and, just in case you missed something on your first voyage, you can start your journey all over again!

Weston SeaQuarium has welcomed its latest additions, a shoal of Blind Cave Fish. These amazing fish have adapted their ability to feed and swim around through dark caves without eyes! With no need for eyes, their sense of smell within the water has increased by having ‘taste buds’ all over their heads, and by being able to store four times more energy as fat allowing them to deal with irregular food supplies more effectively, which is common to cave dwelling creatures. Staff at the Weston super Mare SeaQuarium where startled when it appeared that their Spiny Lobsters had doubled in numbers overnight! But on closer inspection, our resident lobsters had shed their outer skins – creating an exact replica of themselves! To enable themselves to grow, younger lobsters will moult on a regular basis as part of their growing process, shedding their skin when they become too big for their existing shell. As they get older this process occurs less frequently. “This is a fairly frequent event for our younger lobsters” said Displays Manager, Hayley Upham, “but amazing none the less to see these replicas”. It would have taken the lobsters a couple of hours to crawl out of their old shell. And their ‘new’ skin would be fairly soft at first and would take a couple of days to harden into a new shell. Their ‘old’ skins are, amazingly, left whole – an incredible acrobatic act when you consider all their legs! Read More > |
