Rhyl SeaQuarium has an open seafront location and sits on the beautiful North Wales coastline.

We would like to welcome all new explorers to join us on a voyage of discovery as we travel beneath the waves, from tranquil fresh waters to the cold depths of the abyss. Along the way we will encounter the strangely shaped sturgeon, as well as sharks found off our very own coast and rays that glide effortlessly through the water.

We will also find solitary lobsters, conger eels and mystical axolotls before entering the Lethal Reef, home to some of the most poisonous animals on our planet. These are just a few of the amazing, strange and beautiful animals that await us on our adventure.

Rhyl gets a clean up as local volunteers help turn the tide on litter...
- (Added 17. Sep. 2012)

Staff from SeaQuarium and local volunteers have helped clean 5kg of rubbish from Rhyl’s central beach as part of the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) Beachwatch project.

Led by Stacy Adams from SeaQuarium, the volunteers collected and recorded the rubbish along a 100 metre stretch of beach. The data will help MCS identify the main sources of litter along the north Wales coastline and keep the issue of the dangers of marine litter high on the local agenda.

The beach litter survey recorded over 400 items, with the top items found on the day identified as cigarette stubs and plastic objects such as wrappers, bottle caps and drinks straws.

Octoplay every day at SeaQuarium!
- (Added 22. Aug. 2012)
As the summer is starting to draw to a close, most children will not be looking forward to the start of a new school year! This is not the same for SeaQuarium’s resident octopus who has enrolled on an enrichment class. That is because octopi are extremely intelligent creatures that love nothing more than a puzzle or two to keep them entertained, in the same way that you may like Sudoku or crosswords to keep your brain healthy.

SeaQuarium aquarists have been interacting with the octopus in daily enrichment programmes in order to keep this inquisitive animal entertained. Aquarist Martyn Chandler said “We have a selection of different games for the octopus such as ping pong balls, jars, mazes and even a Mr Potato head!” He added “The variety is the key to happiness with the octopus, as if you use the same thing all the time they quickly become bored, much the same as young children. The goal for the octopus is to ‘hunt’ down food in the in different and exciting ways, and it seems the octopus really likes the interaction with our staff”.

Summer Athletic Boot Camp (July 23rd – August 12th 2012)
- (Added 19. Jul. 2012)

Come rain or shine this Summer SeaQuarium’s South African Fur seals are going sporting mad at team SQ boot camp, as they embrace everything athletic in a bid to see who is the best all round athlete in the Sealion cove. They will be testing their abilities in everything from shot put to triple jump and beach volleyball to football. Mammal keeper Stacy Adams says ‘our youngest fur seal, Solo, has really been getting into the spirit of things and has been training hard to make sure she is as good as the athletes you see on television’.

Naturally in the wild the seals would need their fitness and agility for catching fast moving fish and escaping from predators so they like to stay in shape and even go on a diet for the summer period to lose their winter weight just like we do.
