Eel, European (Anguilla anguilla)
The adult European eel has a long narrow body with a continuous dorsal, anal and tail fin. They have slimy skin and their lower jaw is longer than the upper. They appear to have no scales and the colour depends on their age - they can be brown, black or olive-green with yellow bellies or sometimes even silver. They grow up to about 1 metre in length.
Fun Facts...
This eel can remarkably survive out of water for several hours when it is damp. They can even travel overland when it is dark and rainy.
Location...
Found in European rivers that drain into the North Atlantic, Baltic and Mediterranean Seas. Spawning takes place in the Sargosso Sea in the western Atlantic.
Habitat...
Found usually in fresh water streams, rivers and lakes but will migrate to marine waters to breed.
Diet...
Feeds on larvae, fish and crustaceans, but will also eat dead organisms and terrestrial invertebrates.
