Goby, Engineer (Pholidichthys leucotaenia)
The engineer goby is not actually a type of goby but is the only member of the Pholidichthyidae family.
Juveniles are dark blue or black with white horizontal stripes running the length of their body. This is how they gained their other name, the "convict blenny". As they mature, these lines become vertical bands and their shape becomes more eel like.
Fun Facts...
Juveniles of this species resemble the venomous striped catfish to help deter predators.
Location...
Found mainly in the western central Pacific from the Philippines south to the Solomon Islands.
Habitat...
Inhabits shallow lagoons and coastal reefs.
Diet...
Feeds mainly on invertebrates.
