Wrasse, Bird (Gomphosus varius)
The bird wrasse, or birdnose wrasse, is a fish with a long snout that resembles a bird's beak. Juvenile fish are green and white with two black stripes along their body. Adult females are generally lighter in colour than the males and possess a light white-cream colour on the front half of the body. Males tend to have an all green body, ranging from light olive to greenish blue, with a red line on each scale. Adults have extremely elongate jaws, whereas juveniles have shorter jaws. They grow up to about 30cm in length.
Fun Facts... The bird wrasse's elongate jaws are perfect for picking out its prey from coral and rock crevices.
During courtship, males become bluish and the green bar on their bodies intensifies.
Location... Widespread in the Indo-Pacific, from the Hawaiian and Tuamoto Islands, to the Philippines, north to Japan and south to Papua New Guinea, Australia and Indonesia.
Habitat... Inhabits lagoons, coral rich areas and rocky and seaward reefs. Juveniles can sometimes be found hiding amongst sea grass.
Diet...
Benthic crustaceans, molluscs and small fishes.
