Seal of love at SeaQuarium Rhyl
Release Date: Thursday 15 May 2014
Join us for a week full of family fun, facts and crafts as well as some interesting things that you may not know about Rhyl SeaQuarium. Love Your Aquarium Week will be celebrated in the Whitsun half term and will tie in with the Love Your Zoo National campaign encourages people to visit their local zoos and aquariums to learn how much they do for conservation, education and research.
Preparation has also been started on the brand new Seal Lion Show that will take place at 1pm and 3pm each day. During the show we will be guiding guests through the ten things we love about our seals, from their floppy flippers to their big teeth. As part of Love Your Aquarium Week, you will be able to take part in our interactive trail, learn more about the SeaQuarium and the work we do with the chance to win some prizes!
The mammal keepers are busy making the red love hearts that will be added to the pots of fish that are fed to our harbour seals. Whilst carrying out some training we thought we see if they like them. Mammal keeper, Katie Todd introduced the seals to the red, heart shaped ice cubes that will soon be going into their pools. Katie says ‘the girls showed a lot of interest in the hearts and even pushed them around in the water until they melted, luckily for us they didn’t try to eat them all, as we don’t want them to get poorly bellies from eating too much ice”.
Did you know that Rhyl SeaQuarium has the only walk through underwater tunnel in North Wales? And that the tank it is under contains 180,000 litres of water?
There will also be a Craft Club where you can Design Your Own Aquarium and have your face painted with hearts. Continuing the love theme, why not head to the Sea Lion Cove and help feed the love heart treats to the Seals? For those who are brave enough, you will have a chance to get up close and personal with giant snails and rats in our New Fantastic Phobias “face your fears”
