EXPLORE THE NEW INSECTS AT SEAQUARIUM

Staff at SeaQuarium Rhyl are looking forward to once again hosting their annual “Explorers Half Term”.

From 13 until 21 February 2016, budding explorers can join adventurer, Livingstone, on his exciting journey around the aquarium. There will be free daily hands on activities and guests can be treated to a themed seal show and animal encounters.

Also, explorers can travel around the centre to complete a tricky trail of clues to find the animals to earn a prize and explorers sticker badge.

Newly on display for this half term are some new arrivals that have been donated to SeaQuarium ready for the explorers to find. The new animals SeaQuarium have rehomed, are two species of stick insect - Macleay’s spectre (Extatosoma tiaratum) and Vietnamese stick insects (Medauroidea extradentata). 

Displays Aquarist Gareth Mead said,  “We are very pleased to have this donation. The spectre stick insect is native to eucalyptus forests in Australia and can grow up to 5-8 inches long, and the Vietnamese can live up to six months and is native to Vietnam.“ 

He added, “We are looking forward to introducing these new species to our Phobias display. Entomophobia is the fear of insects and it’s one of the top ten phobias in the UK. Lots of people have this fear, so the stick insects will make a great addition to the phobia display here. They have a fear factor because they can hide in plain sight and some species grow absolutely huge! The thought of them could make anyone’s skin crawl.”

Explorers Half Term has various talks and demonstrations taking place throughout the day, where guests are invited to learn more about the weird and wonderful oceans. Guests can become an explorer for the day, and can even have the chance to get up close and personal with come creepy crawlies, including the stick insects, in the daily interactive demonstration!

IT’S FAMILY FUN FOR EVERYONE! Additional to the shows, encounters and trails, to celebrate the new season there will be some extra, fun activities, including FREE craft sessions aimed at children and families. Every explorer needs a telescope and a hat, so guests are welcomed to make their own. There is even the chance to meet Livingstone the Explorer, who will be making appearances over half term, to see how guests are getting along with their underwater adventure.

Explorers Half Term activities are included in the standard admission price, with the exception of the trail, which includes a small fee.

SeaQuarium Rhyl is open 10am daily. Admission is valid all day, so there is the chance to come back and see the main seal feed at 12.00pm and 4pm every day!

The gift shop and Driftwood Café are open daily to everyone!
