Seal Shower at SeaQuarium Rhyl
Release Date: Wednesday 17 July 2013
The staff at the Rhyl SeaQuarium are not the only ones being affected by the heat wave this summer as the seals are enjoying splashing around with a hose pipe, and are getting extra treats of their favourite fish frozen in ice.
South African fur seals have two layers of fur, one of which is moulted during the summer months. Mammal Keeper Martyn Chandler says ‘when the seals are in moult there really is fur everywhere’ he goes on to say ‘ summer is a great time of the year to visit the seals as you can usually see them enjoying sun bathing on the beach area of the pool. We like to give our seals treats of fish frozen in ice throughout the summer, this acts as good enrichment and it is great to see them throwing the ice around to try and get the fish out, Solo even has a habit of throwing her ice at the glass to try and smash it!’.
We don’t forget the harbour seals, they also get the fish frozen in ice, however they are not quite as playful as the South African fur seals and will play for a few minutes before leaving the ice until it melts and the fish falls out.
As an additional thing this year we have also noticed the seals playing with the hose pipe we us to clean the glass. Sefur, the youngest of the seals, loves to try and steal the hose and drags it with her as she swims around the pool.
