Latest arrivals for Halloween at Rhyl
Release Date: Wednesday 30 October 2013
Visitors to SeaQuarium are being spooked out by all the antics that are going on with their spooky Spectacular event in Rhyl. The attraction has celebrated this event by revealing their new arrival of cuttlefish for the very first time, just in time to see the spooky goings on.
Dave Handley, Aquarist, said “We thought it’d be a good chance to introduce the strange creatures during the Halloween holiday. These beautiful species were recently donated to us, and it’s the first time the public will be viewing them during the Spooky event. These amazing creatures are a must see as they have a fringe of fins around their bodies allowing the cuttlefish to hover motionless, but they can also move at high speed by expelling a jet of water from a funnel on the underside of their heads”.
The cuttlefish have settled in quickly and are now on display to the public. “Like octopus and squid, Cuttlefish will release a cloud of ink when threatened to confuse any predators whilst they escape. It is this ink that was collected and used as a dye called Sepia*” Dave added (*Old brown/black and white photos were made using this)
Cuttlefish have the ability to change colour, and can even change the texture of their skin, to blend in with their surroundings. They can even assess their surroundings and change accordingly in pitch black! Although they are believed to be highly intelligent, cuttlefish are relatively short lived creatures, with a maximum lifespan of 18 months. For females the situation is even worse as they breed only once and die soon after laying their eggs.
If you want to learn more about these strange creatures then why not visit SeaQuarium, you can buy your entry ticket online saving 10% off standard price. Alternately don’t put your Halloween costumes away as you can get £2.00 off per person in Halloween fancy dress until the end 3rd November during the spooky Spectacular event.
