SEAQUARIUM CELEBRATES AS TONDY TURNS 21
Release Date: Thursday 14 May 2015
SeaQuarium is holding a special ‘Love your Aquarium’ event from 16th to 31st May ending with a Birthday Bash. Visitors can join in the fun as the staff celebrate the birthday of their very own seal-ebrity.
‘Tondy’ a South African fur seal will be turning the mile stone birthday of twenty-one this year and it’s only fitting that she is treated like a princess. Tondy has already been enjoying some extra treats put on courtesy of her doting seal keepers.
Mammal Keeper, Katie Todd, said “Like any princess she needed a castle so we built her an edible one made from ice! We gave this one an extra special twist by adding natural colours and we even included a generous helping of fish for Tondy! She absolutely loved destroying the castle in order to find the fish hidden amongst the castle walls. Icy treats are fantastic enrichment for our seals. Seals are naturally playful so they not only like to play with it, but ice also helps to cool them down in warmer weather”.
Katie continued, “Being a fur seal these fantastic animals actually have two layers of fur and as you can imagine they get quite hot, so they moult a layer of fur each year in the summer months’.
“Tondy is the oldest seal that we have here at SeaQuarium, but she is still our most energetic and she simply loves to train. Training is an excellent way to make sure our seals are in tip top condition, both physically and mentally”.
As part of the ‘Love your Aquarium’ event visitors will be able to take part in an interactive trail for £1.99, when they can learn more about the SeaQuarium and all the amazing marine life. There is also a competition giving visitors the chance to win an iPod touch and a seal experience, as well as the opportunity to help feed love heart treats to the seals during the daily feeding demonstrations at 12pm and 4pm.
All of SeaQuarium exhibits will be open as usual throughout the week. Standard admission prices are £9.50 for adults and £8.50 for children. There will be talks and demonstrations throughout the day where visitors can learn more about the weird and wonderful creatures that live in the oceans and beyond. Visitors are invited to watch as the South African Fur Seals, including Tondy, show off their spectacular behaviours in daily seal shows at 1pm and 3pm.
Rhyl SeaQuarium is located on the promenade in Rhyl and opens at 10am daily with last admissions at 5pm. Further information is available from SeaQuarium's official website: www.seaquarium.co.uk or by telephone on 01745 344660
