Lobster reveals a new ‘coat’ in time for for summer
Release Date: Monday 21 July 2014
SeaQuarium's resident Lobster has recently shed its shell revealing a new bright blue one underneath. It moulted at the beginning of July just in time for the start of summer.
This is the first time this lobster, which has been at Rhyl for a few years, has shed whilst at SeaQuarium. Lobsters are crustaceans, which can grow to about 60cm in length and like other crustaceans; lobsters have a hard exoskeleton (shell) which they must shed in order to grow, in a process called moulting. This may occur several times a year for young lobsters, but decreases to once every 1–5 years for larger animals.
Moulting is a dangerous time for a lobster as when it first moults its new shell is quite soft and it is vulnerable to attack from predators. The lobster will hide away for around a week until its new shell hardens.
Talks presenter Kayleigh Wilkins said “People still believe that lobsters are red, however common lobsters are actually blue.” She added, “Other species that moult include cockroaches, locusts and tarantula which can all be found in the newly built Fantastic Phobias area”.
SeaQuarium will be open as usual throughout the summer. Standard admission prices are £8.99 for adults and £7.99 for children. There are a variety of talks and demonstrations throughout the day where guests are invited to learn more about the weird and wonderful creatures that live in the oceans and beyond.
SeaQuarium is located on the promenade in Rhyl and is open from 10am daily with last admissions at 4pm. Further information is available from SeaQuarium’s official website: www.seaquarium.co.uk or by telephone on 01745 344660
