Ahoy Shipmates....Who's the Captain?!
Release Date: Monday 18 August 2014
All throughout August, SeaQuarium Rhyl has been overrun with Pirates. Staff have been getting into the spirit of Pirate Month with numerous themed activities and demonstrations as well as the special family seal show with the South African Fur Seal shipmates Tondy and Solo, whereby they have been teaching younger Pirates and staff important lessons such as how to be a good pirate and how to escape from our Dead Man’s Cove.
As keeper Katie Todd explains, “Our seals have always been competitive, and love nothing more than showing off their amazing abilities, but this year it seems the seals really mean business and here is where we are experiencing problems with our two resident superstar seals and we need the audience’s help”.
The SeaQuarium in Rhyl is home to over 100 different species from tarantula to harbour seals, but the undisputed stars of the show are two of the South African Furs Seals Solo and Tondy, who really do entertain with jumps, dives and splashes. But this year it seems they are determined to outdo each other and prove that their jumps are the highest, their splashes are the biggest and to find out who is the top seal.
As their name suggest, South African Fur seals are naturally found on the South African Coasts. They are naturally very acrobatic animals, and need to be to hunt for their food in the rough waters of the Cape. Feeding predominantly on fish, these animals are very fast through the water, reaching speeds of up to 35km per hour as they twist, turn and jump to catch their slippery food.
Katie who works with the seals added, “in the Summer, Seals will naturally compete for dominance within their group, but this year they seem to be doing this by trying to show off more and more in the Pirate show. We’ve used their competitive behaviours to produce the new family show with our seals going head to head, and we need our audiences to decide who is the best!”
The new interactive family seal show is part of the special pirate event at the SeaQuarium and will be running every day till 31st August and can be seen daily at 1 o’clock and 3 o’clock all through August, so why not pop down and make your own mind up who is really top Seal. Guests are also invited to join our Captain’s Craft Club and even take part in a treasure hunt around the centre to uncover some booty of their very own.
There are also various talks and demonstrations taking place throughout the day where guests are invited to learn more about the weird and wonderful oceans, and the pirates that sailed upon them! So if you want to join in the fun, then why not hoist the mizzen and set a bearing for SeaQuarium Rhyl.
