Father's day at SeaQuarium Rhyl
Release Date: Monday 09 June 2014
Join us for Father’s day at SeaQuarium Rhyl and meet our new pipefish. Our new display is home to two different species of pipefish, the snake pipefish and the broad nosed pipefish. Both species of pipefish are native to our waters and can usually be found drifting amongst algae and sea grass close to the shoreline. Snake pipefish are the larger of the two and can reach 50cm in length where as the Broad nose pipefish usually reaches around 20-25cm in length.
Aquarist Gaz Mead says ‘Pipefish are closely related to seahorse, and like seahorses the majority of the parental care is left to the father. The father carries the young in his brood pouch before giving birth to perfect little miniatures.’ He goes on to say ‘The pipefish are a great addition to the centre and guests love to see these unusual creatures’.
The young will begin feeding almost immediately after they are born. Once born they are also self sufficient and do not rely on the parents at all.
To find out more about our pipefish and other fishy fathers come and visit SeaQuarium Rhyl this Fathers day and, to celebrate Father’s Day, we will be treating dads like kids again by charging them less than a child’s admission price (by offering £2.00 off entry when accompanied by at least one other full-paying child*, terms and condition apply valid on 14th and 15th only) voucher can be downloaded from www.facebook.com/SeaQRhyl
On Fathers Day all of SeaQuarium exhibits will be open as usual. There will be talks and demonstrations throughout the day where visitors can learn more about the weird and wonderful creatures that live in the oceans and beyond. For those who are brave enough, you will have a chance to get up close and personal with giant snails and rats in our New Fantastic Phobias “face your fears”
