MUMS THE WORD AT SEAQUARIUM RHYL
Release Date: Sunday 23 March 2014
Staff at SeaQuarium Rhyl have opened a brand new exhibit just in time for Mother’s Day allowing young Axolotls – also known as the Mexican Salamander – to join their parents for the very first time.
The youngsters were born at the centre in 2011. Since then they have lived in a nursery tank, where they could be monitored daily. Axolotls are classed as critically endangered in the wild. They are naturally found in lakes and canals in Mexico, but due to habitat destruction and pollution it has lead to a dramatic decline in population numbers.
Aquarist Dave Handley, said, “Axolotls are known under a variety of different names, another is the Mexican Walking Fish, which is odd because they are not a fish, but an amphibian. They are most unusual amongst amphibians in that they reach adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis. Instead of developing lungs and taking to the land, the adults remain aquatic and gilled. They can also regenerate their limbs and can live to around 20 years of age. In the wild it is possible for adult Axolotl to grow up to 18 inches, although half that size is much more common”
SeaQuarium Rhyl have 14 adult Axolotls and 10 babies. Axolotls can breed throughout the year and courtship usually follows a drop in temperature. The female then lays anywhere up to 1000 eggs in one go which take around 17 days to hatch. The juvenile axolotls are then fed twice a day on artemia, a very small brine shrimp. As they grow the food choice increases in size until fully grown when their favorite food seems to be earth worms.
During Mother’s Day weekend, all mums visiting SeaQuarium Rhyl will be treated to a complimentary cup of tea or coffee in the Driftwood Café and have the opportunity of meet one of the resident South African Fur Seals.
