July is a Month of Celebration at SeaQuarium Rhyl
Release Date: Monday 01 July 2013
It’s a month-long party at SeaQuarium, as the three resident harbour seals all celebrate their birthdays in July. Born at Berne Animal Park in Switzerland, the all-female group have now been in Rhyl for over four years. Wanda turned 17 on July 1st, Ina will be 11 on the 17th and Pamina will be reaching 9 years old on July 29th. In the wild, female harbour seals can reach an age of 30-35 years old, but seals will generally live slightly longer in captivity as it is a stress-free lifestyle. However, stress is thought to be the reason that male harbour seals actually live about 10 years less than the females, only reaching an age of 20-25.
To celebrate their birthdays the seals will be hoping to show off the new behaviours that they are currently learning, as well as enjoying their favourite icy treat of fish frozen in ice. Guests will also have the chance to feed the seals at the daily feeding demonstrations.
Marine mammal keeper Martyn Chandler says, “We’ve had to train these seals pretty much from scratch, which hasn’t been easy as seals usually begin their training when they are very young. The girls have got the idea of training now and are really enjoying having the chance to show off what they know; Ina especially enjoys getting us soaking wet by splashing water at us! They’re hoping one day to be able to give our acrobatic fur seals a run for their money by being more spectacular than them.”
SeaQuarium offers birthday parties for children of all ages, so why not celebrate a birthday alongside the seals? For an additional cost there is even the opportunity for the birthday boy or girl to take centre stage in the amazing seal show, where they will be able to meet one of the resident fur seals and help the trainers.
