New Explorers find babies at SeaQuarium Rhyl!

SeaQuarium Rhyl is hosting its “Explorers Half Term” event for the first time, where budding explorers can join new adventurer, Livingstone, on his journey around the aquarium. As you travel around the centre you can complete a trail of clues to enter a free prize draw, join Livingstone for daily hands on activities and be treated to a themed seal show and animal encounters.
Rhyl SeaQuarium has also welcomed 12 new baby Thornback rays to the centre just in time for explorers week. Display Manager, Zoe Kelly, said “The babies arrived from Bristol Aquarium as eggs back in October. After spending a few months in a specially chilled quarantine tank the eggs began hatching”, our babies are now eating well and have recently been moved onto display, if visitors are lucky they maybe be able to see one swimming or spot their outline in the sand.
Thornback rays are one of the most common rays that can be found along the coast of Britain and can reach up to 1.2 meters in length. They are often encountered by divers exploring the coastline. Thornback rays have coarse ‘thorns’ on the upper side of their body which gives them their name. They like to bury themselves in soft sand during the day with only their eyes and spiracles visible. Empty eggs cases can commonly be found washed up along the coast of Britain, these are known as mermaid’s purses.
Bring your explorers along and see the new babies Rays and help Livingstone find his favourite animals with a FREE Explorers Trail. Follow the clues around our Discovery Trail within SeaQuarium to find the animals. Hand in your completed trail to receive your Explorers Badge, and be entered into a prize draw!
IT’S FAMILY FUN FOR EVERYONE!
To celebrate the new season there will be some extra activities and fun during ‘Explorers Half Term’ with craft sessions aimed at children and families, every explorer needs a telescope and a hat, make your own, it is so much fun... all included in the standard admission price.

SeaQuarium Rhyl is open 10am daily. Admission is valid all day, so don’t forget to come back and see our main seal feed at 12.00pm and 4pm every day!
