Rhyl beach clean campaign!
Release Date: Monday 22 September 2014
Staff from SeaQuarium and local volunteers have helped clean 25kg of rubbish from Rhyl’s central beach as part of the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) Beachwatch project on Sunday 21st September.
Led by Sue Hutton from SeaQuarium, the volunteers collected and recorded the rubbish along a 100 metre stretch of beach. The data will help MCS identify the main sources of litter along the North Wales coastline and keep the issue of the dangers of marine litter high on the local agenda.
Sue Hutton said “There were lots of rubbish that we collected from dirty nappies to lots of broken glass and plastic pieces these are tiny bits of plastic that have broken off larger items, such items are a hazard to the public and the marine wildlife. I would like to say a huge thank you to the 32 volunteers that turned up and helped, both young and old, with some of them travelling from as far away as Cheshire to help us clean Rhyl beach, it was a lovely morning with the sun shining”.
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is the only national UK charity dedicated to the protection of our seas, shores and wildlife. MCS campaigns for clean seas and beaches, sustainable fisheries, and protection of marine life. Through education, community involvement and collaboration, MCS raises awareness of the many threats that face our seas and promotes individual, industry and government action to protect the marine environment.
MCS provides information and guidance on many aspects of marine conservation and produces the annual Good Beach Guide (www.goodbeachguide.co.uk), the Good Fish Guide (www.goodfishguide.co.uk) and www.fishonline.org on sustainable seafood, as well as promoting public participation in volunteer projects such as MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend and Basking Shark Watch.
