LOVE SEAHORSES - LOVE OCEANS WEEK

To celebrate all that is brilliant about the deep blue ocean, SeaQuarium is holding a weeklong Love Oceans event from Saturday 28th May to Sunday 5th June 2016. 
 

Staff at the aquarium will be highlighting the threats the world’s oceans face and sharing some interesting facts, with extra talks and demonstrations taking place throughout the day. 
 

There will be some new arrivals too, with six new big-bellied seahorses joining the display. They arrived at the centre approximately a month ago and after going through their quarantine period they are now ready to join the resident seahorses in the main display. 
 

Big-bellied seahorses are the largest species of seahorse. They pair for life and can often be seen carrying out an elaborate courtship dance together to reinforce their bond. 
 

Displays Assistant Helen Seeby, said, "Seahorses are incredible creatures, but they are currently under threat from human interactions. They are popular in Chinese medicine and the curio trade where they are sold as souvenirs. They are also becoming more widely distributed in the pet trade where they never do well and usually die quickly.” 
 

She continued, “Most people don’t realise that there are two species of seahorse in British waters. They are the short snouted seahorse and the spiny seahorse. Both species are now protected. 
 

“Love Oceans week provides a great chance to learn more about different marine habitats. From British coastlines to tropical seas, guests can get a glimpse of the different species that live in these habitats, right at SeaQ. We hope to raise awareness of the threats to our seas and fundraise for the Marine Conservation Society, (the UK charity for the protection of our seas, shores and wildlife) at the same time.”

Throughout the Love Oceans event there will be additional talks and demonstrations with our seahorses, a craft club for the children where they can design their own sea creature and a Love Ocean trail where guests can learn a little more about the wonders of the ocean. 
 

All of SeaQuarium’s exhibits will be open as usual. Guests are able to see the seahorses as well as a wide variety of other species of all shapes and sizes. There is a full programme of talks, demonstrations and seal shows taking place throughout the day. 
 

Standard admission prices are £9.50 for adults, £8.50 for children and £8.99 Concession. Alternatively guests can book in advance online and save up to 25% off the standard admission price.
