GULLIVER TRAVELS TO SEAQUARIUM WESTON IN TIME FOR EXPLORERS WEEK
Release Date: Monday 08 February 2016
Staff at Weston SeaQuarium are excited to welcome Gulliver the baby moon jellyfish, just in time for the annual Explorers half term week.
Gulliver’s story is a unique one indeed; his story begins with a young girl and a dream of having a pet. Olivia Amey from Bristol decided to purchase the equipment needed to house her new pet, from a popular online website.
Olivia’s parents were not aware of these purchases.
When they received an odd package in the post, they were confused and questioned Olivia. Olivia said this was the home for her new fish. One week later a special delivery arrived - a fish! Once opened, her parents realised the fish wasn’t just any fish - it was a baby jellyfish!
Olivia’s parents knew that this fish needed additional care so for the jellyfish’s best interest, they decided he had to live with an experienced keeper. Mrs Amey, Olivia’s mother, was quick to call the staff at SeaQuarium to see if they could rehome him. Olivia understood that this was the best thing to do for her new fish and gave him a name to suit his travels, “Gulliver”.
Senior Aquarist Paul Strachan said, “We are pleased that Olivia kindly donated Gulliver to us. These moon jellyfish require specialist care, a standard fish tank is not suitable to house a jellyfish as they are very delicate animals. They pulsate to move and often swim upright so their tentacles cover as great an area as possible to catch their prey. Gulliver is now settled in our specially designed tank called a kiresel. This provides circular water movement to stop the jellyfish catching and injuring themselves on the edges of tanks. Gulliver is eating very well and growing into his new home, hoped to be joined soon by many other jellies.”
From 13th until 21st February 2016, guests can bring their little explorers to join Livingstone the Explorer on an adventure around the aquarium, as he delves beneath the waves in search of all its colourful inhabitants. There will be hands on activities, a Craft Club and talks throughout the day, to find out more about the weird and wonderful creatures who live at Seaquarium, including Gulliver.
Whilst Gulliver explores his new home, budding explorers will be able to follow clues around the aquarium to help Livingstone find all of his friends, and earn their very own Explorers sticker and prize, by taking part in the Explorers Trail.
Explorers Week activities are included in the standard admission price, with the exception of the Explorers Trail*, which includes a small fee.
