INVERTEBRATES WEEK AT SEAQ!
Release Date: Sunday 24 September 2017
Staff at SeaQuarium Weston are dedicating an entire week to raising awareness for invertebrates — an often overlooked but fascinating group of animals. Invertebrates Awareness Week will run from 30 September - 6 October, where guests can find out more about these amazing animals and the role they play in their natural habitats.
During the week, there will be exclusive Invertebrates Talks taking place at 3pm, whereby guests will have the chance to watch the aquarists feed some of the creatures and learn more about conservation efforts to protect them. Particular focus will be paid to the crustacean and crab collections, with staff aiming to educate guests about how the invertebrates’ life cycles affect eco-systems around the world.
SeaQuarium Aquarist, Emily Douglas said, “Invertebrates are animals which neither possess or develop a spine. According to one study, it is believed that almost 97% of animal species are invertebrates. There are seven primary groups of invertebrates, including sponges, ctenophores, cnidarians, echinoderms, worms, mollusks and arthropods — some live on land and others in the sea. All together they form a part of the world’s diverse and fascinating eco-system.”
She continued, “Guests are able to see a different array of invertebrate species here at SeaQuarium Weston, including crabs, jellyfish, starfish, anemones, corals, shrimps, sea urchins, cockroaches and millipedes, as well as a wide variety of other sea creatures of all shapes and sizes.”
All SeaQuarium exhibits will be open as usual, with a schedule of talks and feeding demonstrations taking place throughout the day.
