JOIN US IN SHELLEBRATING TURTLE AWARENESS WEEK AT SEAQUARIUM!
Release Date: Monday 22 May 2017
We are dedicating an entire week to raising awareness to help protect turtles in the wild. From 20 - 26 May, come and find out more about the conservation of these amazing species at SeaQuarium Weston.
Staff at the centre are dedicating the whole week to raising awareness of the problems suffered by turtles worldwide. There will be special talks, craft sessions and feeding demonstrations taking place throughout the week.
Staff are aiming to educate guests about what they can do to help save Turtles, along with other reptiles, such as snakes and lizards which have been on Earth for over 215 million years!
SeaQuarium Senior Aquarist, Hannah Knott says, “Turtles are an ancient group of reptiles that were alive when dinosaurs walked the earth, with the earliest turtle fossils dated at around 110 million years old! Unfortunately, these brilliant animals are put in danger of becoming extinct. Unsustainable exploitation, accidental entanglement in fishing gear, marine pollution and habitat destruction are all to blame.”
She added “In support of our Turtle Awareness Week, we will be scheduling additional talks and feeding demonstrations to highlight the problems faced by turtles in the UK and around the world. There will be fun activities throughout the weekend and guests can help raise money for the Marine Conservation Society”
All SeaQuarium exhibits will be open as usual. Guests are able to see a different array of species of turtle including Map, Jefferies, Sideneck and Snake Neck Turtles as well as a wide variety of other sea creatures of all shapes and sizes. There is a schedule of talks and feeding demonstrations taking place throughout the day as well as an exclusive Turtle Talk taking place at 2:00pm.
