LOVE OCEANS AND YOUR HEART!
Release Date: Monday 30 January 2017
Staff at SeaQuarium Weston are getting ready to hold a week-long ‘Love Oceans’ event for February half term.
From 11th-19th February, guests can participate in a full week of family fun, crafts and learn fishy facts, to highlight all that there is to love about the world’s oceans and its amazing inhabitants.
The aim of the week is to raise awareness of the threats the world’s oceans face and to share some interesting facts, with extra talks and demonstrations taking place throughout the day.
This year the SeaQuarium has teamed up with the British Heart Foundation for an insight into a very interesting phenomenon. Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK are living with debilitating heart failure. But one small fish may be the key to helping all of these people.
Zebra danios, also known as zebra fish, are currently being studied by scientists all over the world. This is because if a part of their heart is damaged they can repair up to 75% in a matter of weeks, just like humans are able to mend a broken bone.
These fantastic fish will be the latest addition to the aquarium, so guests can learn more about this amazing ability by visiting presentations about them, taking place everyday during the event.
James Press, Deputy Attractions Manager, said, “We are proud to be raising awareness for such an important charity this year and welcome our latest additions to the aquarium — the zebra danios, commonly known as the zebra fish. This unique creature’s ability to repair damaged cells can one day hopefully help us further understand how to improve our quality of life after severe heart problems.”
As well as meeting the new arrivals, guests are invited to see a microscopic view of the wonders that can live in a single drop of sea water in the Discover Oceans sessions. Lead by a team of knowledgeable aquarists, they will be given the chance to identify and learn about the fascinating creatures hidden inside.
It’s not all about learning though, as children and grown ups of all ages can get hands on in the craft club, where they will be given the opportunity to create their own fishy creature to take home.
Also, as part of Love Oceans Week, there will also be chance to take part in a fantastic interactive trail for a small fee, learn more about the SeaQuarium’s underwater inhabitants and earn a ‘Love Oceans’ sticker and prize!
The UK based, British Heart Foundation, are the nation’s largest heart charity and the largest independent funder of cardiovascular research. This pioneering charity has helped to transform the lives of people living with heart and circulatory conditions. To find out more visit: https://www.bhf.org.uk/
