Mouth Brooding Malawi’s at SeaQuarium Weston
Release Date: Monday 20 March 2017
Its Mother’s day at SeaQuarium Weston and we’ve been on a mission to find the most unusual maternal phenomenon in our aquarium and we think we have may have found it!
Malawi cichlid fish are caring and protective parents. They remain involved in guarding their young against predators, selecting behaviours to assist their children, including digging paths through the river floor and clearing away small debris on the ground to uncover food.
On top of this they also are known to perform mouth brooding – this means that the female incubates her eggs in her mouth. When the female releases her eggs the male then fertilises them and she recollects them with care into her mouth. The eggs can remain inside the female’s mouth until they hatch.
The female will allow the young to enter her mouth for a period of time after they have hatched to ensure they are protected. Once they reach a larger size the female will stop them from entering her mouth.
Visitors can come and see our Malawi Cichlids over the Mother’s Day weekend commencing 25th and 26th March 2017.
Talks, presentations and hands-on activities will take place all weekend to celebrate the hardworking mothers of the sea!
