NATIONAL INSECT WEEK AT SEAQUARIUM RHYL

Release Date: Monday 13 June 2016

SeaQuarium Rhyl is encouraging guests of all ages to learn about insects and the perfect time is National Insect Week, from 18th to 26th June 2016!

Throughout the week, there will be extra talks and demonstrations taking place where guests can learn more about the stick insects and why they’re having a baby boom at the moment. There will also be a craft session taking place daily where children can design their own insect!

Aquarist Gareth Mead said, “We are finding more and more stick insect babies every day! You have to look really closely in the enclosure to spot them and at approximately 1cm in length, they really are quite small, so they blend in with their surroundings really well.”

He continued, “Vietnamese stick insects are all female – they reproduce parthenogenetically which means that they lay eggs which hatch out into perfect miniature copies of the mother. They are masters of camouflage and can sometimes be hard to spot amongst the bramble that they feed on. If you look closely, though, you can see them swaying as if they are twigs swaying in the wind”.

SeaQuarium’s Vietnamese stick insects and their babies can be found in the Fantastic Phobia section, along with a few other species that are common phobias including rats, snakes, snails and much more. These animals may freak people out but are not as scary as they may think and most stick insects are completely harmless.

Throughout the week, all of SeaQuarium’s exhibits will be open as usual. Guests are able to see the stick insects as well as a wide variety of other species of all shapes and sizes. There is a full programme of talks, demonstrations and seal shows taking place throughout the day.
