EGG’-CITING TIMES FOR SEAQUARIUM!…

This Easter, Rhyl SeaQuarium will be celebrating eggs of a very different variety, with a host of exciting activities dedicated to the huge array of weird and wonderful eggs found in our oceans.

From Saturday 1st April to Sunday 23rd April, Rhyl SeaQuarium will be holding a whole host of extra Easter activities for the whole family, in their annual Easter Eggstravaganza event. Children and adults alike can look forward to ‘eggsploring’ the centre to help find the eggs that have gone missing deep in the tanks. Those who are clever another to crack the Easter password in the Eggsplorer’s Trail, will win a delicious Easter treat. 

Also, there is an exciting competition to win a 16GB iPod Touch, where all guests need to do is find the missing golden egg, capture a photo with it and upload it to the SeaQuarium’s Facebook page.

Aquarist Gareth Mead said, “This time of year is perfect to show visitors the eggs of the ocean, especially as we’ve just had lots of eggs laid. I was shocked to see so many egg cases turn up overnight in one of our tanks, and we haven’t had any hatch for a few years now, so fingers crossed for these ones”.

Gareth added, “The fertile eggs will now go on display in special nursery tanks ready for the Easter Eggstravaganza event, where visitors will be able to watch them grow and develop and eventually, we hope, hatch into babies”. Also known as mermaid’s purses, the beautiful transparent pouches clearly show the growing embryos getting ready to hatch. 

In association with Shark Trust UK, SeaQuarium are asking anyone who spots any egg cases on the beach, to get in contact with them, or alternatively visit www.eggcase.org or use #GreatEggcaseHunt to report their findings. 

Gareth said: “In recent decades several species of skate and ray around the British coast have dramatically declined in numbers. The empty egg cases that wash up on our beaches all year round are an easily accessible source of information on the whereabouts of skate, shark and ray nursery grounds and we would like to hear from anyone who finds them.”

Additionally to the competition and trail, there will be daily family-friendly interactive shows by the resident seals that live at SeaQuarium’s Seal Cove, at 1.00pm and 3.00pm. Seal feeding demonstrations will be at 12pm and 4pm daily. Plus, there will be a chance for children to make their very own Easter crafts in the free Eggsplorer’s Craft Club. With lots of Easter competitions and activities, it will be a true Easter Eggstravaganza!

During the Easter holidays all of SeaQuarium’s exhibits will be open as usual as we invite eggsplorers to find the lettered eggs hidden around the aquarium. Standard admission prices are £9.50 for adults and £8.50 for children. Visitors can also touch and feel artefacts such as empty egg cases in the daily touch pool demonstrations throughout the day, where they can learn more about the weird and wonderful creatures that live in the oceans and beyond.
